Faceted Search

How to set up facets in your Frontify Libraries, and find your assets within seconds.

Updated over a week ago

The faceted search function allows you to narrow down search results by applying multiple filters based on faceted classifications – simplifying the process of finding your digital assets. Read along to figure out how to set up your facets within the Frontify Libraries.

1. Add facets

If you have the right to edit your Library, you can directly add facets to the search bar on the frontend view. Just switch to edit mode, click on the filter drop-down (left from the search bar) > add facet.

To add a metadata facet, simply select which single- or multiselect metadata property you wish to add as a facet. Give it a name and save. The facet will automatically populate in the filter dropdown.

You can navigate to the second tab to add a tag-based facet. Here, too, first give the facet a name, before adding as many tag groupings as needed to populate the filter. The third tab contains out-of-the-box facets that you can add to your filters. These are currently an orientation facet and a file type facet.

2. Edit facets

You might have set up your facets - and worked with them for a while - before recognizing that they’re not precise enough. That’s no problem at all. By clicking on the cog wheel next to the facet title, you can edit its settings whenever needed.

Here you can change the facet title, and add or remove the filters defined for the facet. For the latter, click on “Add Filter” and insert the new filter you wish to have in place.

3. Conditional facets

You’re also able to set up conditional facets. With this functionality, you can define the conditions under which certain facets should appear. Once you’ve linked the main facet to a sub-facet, conditionally, the sub-facet will only appear once the main facet is ticked. This way, you’re able to not overcrowd your facet view right from the beginning, and therefore keep the overview and optimize your search.

To set up conditional facets, go to the consumer view of your Library. Then, switch to edit mode and open the filter dropdown. To do this, you will need to have "filter view" active instead of "pill view". Once your facet and sub-facet values are defined, click on the cogwheel next to the facet, and switch to the ‘Visibility’ tab. Now, click on ‘Add Condition’, and select the conditional facet, and the conditional value. That’s it.

4. Customize your facet view

Further, you’re able to place your facets in whatever way you feel comfortable with. By clicking on one of the plus signs on both sides of a column, you can simply add another column. By drag and drop, you can further move your facets around.

Finally, you can change facet settings by clicking on the button “Search Settings”. Explicitly, you can change the width of your columns, and checkbox color, filter display style – and more.
