Color schemes FAQ

Getting started

What is a color scheme? A color scheme is a set of colors for your guideline. It controls backgrounds, text, buttons, links, and more. It helps keep your guidelines consistent and on-brand.

How do I access color schemes? Install the Classic or Muse theme from the Marketplace to unlock color schemes.

Where do I set up color schemes? Click the paintbrush icon in the PowerBar. Then click Color Schemes to start customizing.

Design settings vs. Color schemes

What happened to design settings? When you switch to the Classic or Muse themes, color schemes replace design settings. You can now edit your main fonts, type styles, buttons, and accent colors directly in the themes and color schemes sidebars. You can also create multiple color schemes with a different set of colors for each element.

Have my old design settings been migrated to color schemes? Yes! When you switch to Classic or Muse, your existing settings are automatically moved into your default color scheme. Your main fonts, type styles, buttons, and accent colors will all be there.

Customizing colors in your guidelines

What can I customize with color schemes? You can customize:

  • Document page background color

  • Main font

  • Type styles

  • Buttons

  • Accent colors

What can’t I customize with color schemes yet? You can’t customize these yet:

  • Section background color

  • Footer background color

  • Library page background color

  • List styling

Creating and managing multiple color schemes

Can I create more than one color scheme? Yes! You can create and manage multiple color schemes in one guideline.

How do I create a new color scheme? Click Actions, then select Create new.

How do I rename a color scheme? Click Actions, then select Rename.

How do I delete a color scheme? Click Actions, then select Delete.

Applying and selecting color schemes

Can I apply a color scheme to just one page? Yes! You can apply a color scheme to a single document page or to all document pages at once.

Can I import color schemes from other guidelines? Not yet. But soon, you’ll be able to import color schemes, along with typography, buttons, and layout and navigation settings, to keep your guidelines consistent.

Best practices

How should I start using color schemes? Start by setting up your default color scheme. Then, create extra schemes if you want to style different sections or pages.

How many color schemes should I create? It depends on your needs. Some brands stick to one scheme for consistency. Others create multiple schemes to differentiate pages or sections.

Will color schemes affect accessibility? Yes! Make sure your text and background colors meet accessibility standards for contrast and readability.
