Symphony metadata schema duplicator

Easily sync metadata across libraries

Updated over a week ago

The metadata schema duplicator built by our partner Symphony allows Frontify customers to copy and align metadata fields and values from one or more brand libraries into a target library. It automates comparison and merging so teams can maintain consistent metadata structures without manually recreating fields.

The app helps ensure taxonomies stay aligned across libraries while giving users control over which fields and values are duplicated.

Why use metadata schema duplicator?

  • Keep metadata schemas consistent across multiple libraries

  • Reduce manual effort when setting up or maintaining libraries

  • Avoid errors caused by inconsistent field names or structures

  • Scale metadata management across brands, regions, or teams

  • Speed up library creation and migration workflows

What the app does

The metadata schema duplicator enables structured metadata synchronization between brand libraries, including:

Source library selection

  • Retrieve all available brand libraries (with pagination when needed)

  • Select one or more libraries as metadata sources

Metadata analysis

  • Read all existing metadata fields and values in the current library

  • Identify what already exists before copying

Selective metadata duplication

  • Browse metadata fields and values from selected source libraries

  • Copy entire fields or individual values for granular control

Automated comparison & merge

  • Compare source metadata with the current library

  • Match fields only when both title and field type align

Safe application of changes

  • Add missing options to existing fields

  • Skip options that already exist to prevent duplication

  • Create new metadata fields when no matching field is found

How to use the app

  1. Choose source libraries
Select one or more brand libraries to use as metadata sources. The app retrieves all available libraries and supports pagination where needed.

  2. Review metadata in the current library
The app reads all existing metadata fields and values to understand what is already present.

  3. Select metadata to copy
Browse fields and values from the selected source libraries. Choose entire fields or specific options to duplicate.

  4. Run the comparison
The app compares the selected metadata with the current library. Fields are considered a match only if both the title and field type align.

  5. Apply the merge

    • Missing options are added to existing fields

    • Existing options are skipped to avoid duplication

    • New fields are created when no match is found

Typical use cases

  • Setting up a new library based on an existing brand’s metadata

  • Keeping multiple libraries aligned across teams, brands, or regions

  • Migrating libraries where metadata needs to be replicated or normalized

  • Expanding taxonomies by importing established fields and values

  • Eliminating manual recreation of metadata structures at scale
