The Analytics Dashboard already gives you a convenient way of how often users consume your Brand Guidelines or parts of them. However, you may want to dig deeper and get more insights on the type of users, what and where they download files, videos they watch, or just how they navigate over your Guidelines. This is when you'd need to hook up your analytics tool to Frontify. Here's how.
What is Segment?
Segment.com is a cloud service that allows you to connect business applications like Frontify to 200+ analytics applications like Google Analytics 4 (GA4). By supporting Segment, we'll enable you to get insights on Brand Guidelines usage in your system of choice. Segment is free for up to 1,000 users per month.
What is tracked?
Currently, we're tracking document, page, and section views as well as the user login method, downloads, and played videos. This allows you to analyze various metrics regarding your Brand Guidelines content, e.g., Number of Views per Page, Read Time, Bounce Rate, Demographics & more. Please let us know if you need more metrics from your Brand Guidelines. Following the steps to connect Segment and GA4 to your Frontify instance and start tracking events.
Step 1: Prepare Segment to use in Frontify
First, you have to create a new Segment account. After logging into Segment, you need to add a new JavaScript source with your Frontify domain as the "Website URL," e.g., "company-12345.frontify.com" or your custom domain.
Once you've added the new source, copy your Segment Key (you'll need it later) and create a new destination with "Add Destination."
Choose your preferred destination from a catalog of 200+ applications, e.g., GA4.
Then you should choose a destination name that identifies your organization's destination.
Step 2: Enable Segment in Your Guidelines
Go to your Brand Guidelines and open the General settings via Power Bar.
Scroll down to the "Segment" section and toggle "Enabled," then configure your Segment Key (see above) to enable tracking. You've successfully set up Segment integration, and the data now flows into your destination system(s).
⚠️ You must repeat this step for each Brand Guideline you like to connect with Segment.
a.) If you like to track all your Brand Guidelines in one report, use the same Segment key in every Brand Guideline.
b.) If you like to track each Brand Guideline in separate reports, use different segment keys. Which means you have to create several Segment sources.
Step 3: Test your Segment Integration
The best way to test your integration is in the Segment debugger. Open your source and perform some downloads on your Guidelines. You should see tracking results in Segment debugger instantly.
⚠️ If you have any active privacy protection or adblocker extensions in your browser, Segment won't be able to track your events.
Step 4: Connect Segments with your Analytics tool
To create your personal reports, Frontify sends the following dimensions.
Default dimensions
If you connect, for example, GA4, these properties are displayed in all default reports.
Event Name (e.g., 'Download,' 'Play,' 'Page')
Event Category (category, e.g., 'Brand Guideline image')
Event Label (label, e.g., the filename of your download)
Custom Dimensions
Custom dimensions can be sent to your destinations. For now, the following dimensions are tracked:
block (e.g., 'image')
category (e.g., 'Brand Guideline image')
filename (uploaded file, e.g., 'logo-2x.png')
src (source of a video or download)
url (visitor's current page, e.g., frontify.com/document/420)
signup_mode (tracked per event and per anonymous session, e.g., 'SIMPLE')
isAttachment (set if download is a block's attachment)
isViewer (true if the event is tracked from the Frontify detail viewer)
Set up your Analytics Tool
⚠️ Some Analytics tools cannot change a custom dimensions ID, so we suggest creating the custom dimensions in your analytics tool first. Segment allows you to adjust the ID afterward.
E.g., GA 4 has settings in admin -> custom definitions -> custom dimensions.
Further Information: Google Analytics 4 custom dimensions
Adapt Segment
For GA4, there is an option at the destination -> settings (sprocket icon) -> 'Custom Dimensions.' Fill in the custom dimension names (E.g., 'url,' 'filename,' etc.) and the index number.
Further Information: Configure Segment for custom dimensions
Example Configuration of Custom Dimensions with GA 4
First, you may want to understand all the dimensions available. Please check out the Schema label under the source view of Segment. There you can find all the dimensions available, grouped by events type (i.e., Page views, Download, and Play). Follow the gif below to see the path to the dimensions dashboard.
Then, once you're clear on which custom dimension you want to track, we need to tell Segment the custom dimension to send to GA4. Ensure that the event you choose is the same on the Schema view, and then add all the events you want to track to GA4 following the two gifs below.
Then, we need to set up GA4 to receive the custom dimension we previously set up. To do that, check out the gifs below. Go to the Admin view of GA4 and click the Custom Definition button.
Then you need to add a new dimension by clicking the top-right corner button.
To simplify, we suggest naming the event with the same name you previously selected in Segment.
Step 6: Display your Custom Dimensions in a Custom Report
The usage of custom dimensions depends on your tool. In GA4, you have to create a custom report. There, you can add your custom dimensions and a metric.
Tip: We recommend 'Total Events' as a starting point.
