Creating a new guideline within Frontify

Learn how to create a new guideline in Frontify, choose a template and theme, and start adding content.

Guidelines bring your brand identity, design principles, and resources together in one place.

You can create multiple guidelines within a brand to organize content for different teams, markets, or purposes. If your organization manages several brands, you can create separate guidelines for each one.

Create a new guideline

Select or create a brand

Before creating a guideline, select the brand it belongs to. Use the brand switcher in the top-left corner of Frontify to choose an existing brand. If your organization supports multiple brands, account admins can create a new brand.

Note: Only account admins can create new brands. Once a brand is created, account admins and assigned brand owners can update its settings, including the brand color.

  1. In the brand dashboard, click on New brand.

  2. Enter your brand name.

  3. Choose a brand color and select Save. This color is used for the brand tile, guideline icon backgrounds, and default logo download previews.

  4. Click Finish setup.

Availability: Multiple brands are available on Enterprise plans with multi-brand licensing. If your organization has a single brand, you can still create multiple guidelines within it.

Create your guideline

  1. Open Guidelines in the left navigation of your brand.

  2. Click on New guideline.

  3. Enter a unique name for your guideline.

  4. Choose a template:

    • Blank: Start with an empty guideline without predefined documents or content blocks.

    • Basic: Start with a predefined structure of documents and pages, with placeholder content blocks for logos, colors, typography, and icons.

    • Advanced: Expands on the basic template with additional sections for brand identity, photography, and extended design guidelines.

  5. Choose a theme to define the layout and appearance of your guideline.

  6. Click on Confirm to create the guideline.

Start building your guideline

Once your guideline is created, you can start organizing and adding content.

  • Organize your navigation: Use the navigation manager in edit mode to create and arrange documents, pages, categories, and other navigation items.

  • Add content: Use content blocks to add text, images, colors, typography, and other content to your guideline pages.

  • Manage your settings: Open Settings from the powerbar to configure sharing, languages, and other available options.

Creating a guideline from an existing one

You can also create a guideline by duplicating an existing one. This is useful when you want to reuse an established structure or content rather than starting from scratch.
