Frontify offers flexible sorting options across your Library to help you and your users easily find what you need. However, it’s essential to understand how sorting works across different areas of the platform and where default sorting can and cannot be customized.
Sorting in the Library pages
In the frontend Library view, users can sort assets using the drop-down menu at the top right.
The selector uses a two-step interaction. First select the sort property, then choose the direction.
Sorting on the library page now includes not only the newest, oldest and the assets name but also outlines sorting by:
Date added — Newest / Oldest
Available date — Newest / Oldest (the publishing date set by an editor; controls when the asset becomes visible to users)
Date created — Newest / Oldest (the EXIF date embedded in the file itself, such as when a photo was taken; this is not the date the asset was uploaded to Frontify)
Date expiring — Soonest / Latest (the date an editor has set for when the asset expires and should no longer be used)
File extension — A–Z / Z–A
Name — A–Z / Z–A
Best match — applied automatically upon search unless a user has specifically set a different sorting then the default within that session.
Setting the Default Sort (Library pages only)
As an editor, you can define the default asset sorting for all users:
Click the paintbrush Themes icon in the left sidebar.
Select Layout and Navigation.
Under the Assets section, choose your preferred default sorting option.
This default sorting will apply to the asset grid view, not collections or individual collection contents.
Note: The default sort setting is available only for the Library page view. It doesn't carry over to the backend workspace or Collections.
Sorting in the Backend Library (Workspace View)
In the backend library, assets can be sorted using the same two-step sort picker available in the frontend. Select the sort property first, then the direction. When you refresh the page, your sorting option will be the last property used.
Available sort options include:
Date added — Newest / Oldest
Available date — Newest / Oldest (the publishing date set by an editor; controls when the asset becomes visible to users)
Date created — Newest / Oldest (the EXIF date embedded in the file itself, such as when a photo was taken; this is not the date the asset was uploaded to Frontify)
Date expiring — Soonest / Latest (the date an editor has set for when the asset expires and should no longer be used)
Date Modified — Newest / Oldest
File extension — A–Z / Z–A
Manual
Name — A–Z / Z–A
Best match — appears automatically when a search is active, ordering results by relevance. Reverts to your previous sort when the search is cleared.
There is currently no way to set a persistent default sort order in the backend view.
Sorting Collections
Collections within your Library are also sortable using the same options:
Newest, Oldest, Title A–Z, Title Z–A
However:
There is no way to set a persistent default sort order for collections.
Users can sort them temporarily, but the sorting will reset.
This applies to both frontend and backend views.
Want to influence Collection order?
While you can’t set a default sort for collections, you can pin collections to prioritize them:
Pinned (or "featured") collections appear first in the Library.
If multiple collections are pinned, they’re sorted using the "Newest first" order by default.
Unpinned collections appear afterward, using the same "Newest first" sort.
