How to delete a library

There are two distinct ways to "delete" a library in Frontify, depending on what you want to achieve: removing it from the frontend of a guideline, or permanently deleting it from the backend. These are separate actions with very different outcomes.

Removing a library from a guideline (frontend)

Removing a library from a guideline disconnects it from the guideline's navigation, so it no longer appears in the top navigation bar for viewers. Removing a library from the navigation manager removes its frontend access, but does not delete the library from the backend. The library and all its assets remain fully intact in the backend.

Required permissions: You must be an editor or owner of the guideline to access the navigation manager and remove items from it.

Steps:

  1. Open the guideline in Frontify.

  2. Click the navigation manager icon in the power bar on the left side of your screen.

  3. Locate the library you want to remove in the navigation structure.

  4. Hover over the library name to reveal the three-dot menu (⋯).

  5. Select "Remove from guideline" and confirm the action.

Note: This action only removes the frontend connection between the library and the guideline. The library will still be active on the backend and cannot be removed unless done on the backend. If you want to reconnect the library to the guideline in the future, you can do so at any time via the navigation manager by selecting Add → Library.

Note: If the library is inside a document group, you will need to remove each library within the group before you can delete the group itself.

Deleting a library permanently (backend)

Permanently deleting a library removes it entirely from Frontify, including all assets, folders, and metadata within it. This action cannot be undone.

Required permissions: An owner can edit and delete the complete project and invite or remove other team members. You must be an owner of the library to delete it. Editors do not have permission to delete a library.

Steps:

  1. Navigate to your brand and go to the libraries tab in the backend.

  2. Hover over the library card you want to delete.

  3. Click the cogwheel icon (⚙️) in the top right corner of the library card.

  4. Select Delete and confirm the action.

⚠️ Warning: Deleting a library is permanent and cannot be undone. Make sure you no longer need the library or any of its contents before proceeding.

Note: If the library is currently linked to a guideline, removing it from the backend will also remove it from the guideline's frontend navigation.
