Set up and manage typography in your guidelines

Learn how to define brand fonts and customize type styles across your brand guidelines.

Typography gives you global control over how text appears across your guidelines. In edit mode, Typography lives directly on the powerbar, letting you configure your primary font and fine-tune type styles, such as headings, body text, and quotes, without opening theme settings first.

Set your main font

Your main font serves as the global typographic default across your entire guideline.

  1. Open your guideline in edit mode.

  2. Select Typography from the powerbar.

  3. Under Main font, choose your brand’s primary typeface from your uploaded custom fonts or standard system fonts. Your selection applies automatically, and all default text blocks throughout your guidelines will immediately adopt the selected font.

Customize type styles

Frontify includes predefined type styles for all essential guideline elements. You can modify any of these styles to match your brand specifications.

How to set up a type style

  1. In the Typography panel, scroll to Type styles.

  2. Select the specific style you want to adjust.

  3. Click the Edit (pencil) icon to open its formatting settings.

  4. Set your typographic rules:

    • Font family: Select the typeface for this specific style.

    • Size: Define the font size.

    • Weight: Set the font weight.

    • Letter spacing: Adjust character tracking (negative values are supported).

    • Line height: Set proportional vertical spacing between lines of text.

    • Margins: Control spacing above and below the text element.

    • Text formatting toggles: Quickly toggle uppercase, italic, or underline styling.

  5. Click Save. Any text formatted with that style will update automatically across the entire guideline.

Use custom styles

Frontify provides three custom styles in addition to standard headings and body text. While you cannot add extra style slots, you can repurpose these three custom slots for unique brand formatting needs, such as:

  • Subheadings or kicker text

  • Captions and image credits

  • Dedicated light or white body text for dark backgrounds

Typography vs. color schemes

  • Typography (in the powerbar): Defines typographic structure, such as font family, weight, size, letter spacing, line height, and margins.

  • Color schemes (in the powerbar): Defines the colors applied to those type styles across different page backgrounds and sections.

Tip: If you need to upload new font files, manage them globally in your account under Essentials → Fonts. Once added there, they become instantly selectable within guideline typography.
