In the frontend library, you can set the default sorting of assets by going to the 'Search Settings' -> 'Content' in edit mode. There you can find the 'Default order of assets' option:

This is not possible in the backend library. There, if you reload the page the order settings are changed back to “Manual” and you need to change it again to “Newest” for example.
