Microsoft Office Link (powered by LinkrUI) installation guide

Learn how to connect Microsoft Office Link to Frontify

Updated over 2 weeks ago

This is a companion article to the LinkrUI Beginners Guide. You will need to review both articles to get started using the Connector.

What is Microsoft Office Link?

Microsoft Office Link (powered by LinkrUI) is a native add-in for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. It enables direct searching, opening, and placing of assets stored in Frontify from within Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Access Frontify's DAM directly from Word, PowerPoint, and Excel from a built-in panel, leveraging existing assets and uploading new assets.

  • Microsoft Office Link is a 2-way integration. You can use assets from Frontify as well as push new Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files to Frontify.

  • Access to all of your Frontify Icon, Media, and Document Libraries.

  • Supports digital assets only (no fonts, colors, etc.).

  • Open and update existing Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files stored in Frontify from within the corresponding Microsoft app.

Installing the Connector

Additionally, you will need either the desktop or online version of Excel, Word, or PowerPoint. Follow these steps to install Microsoft Office Link:

  1. Obtain your organization's Microsoft Office Link activation code from the responsible person in your organization (the delegate, more info here).

  2. For Desktop apps:

    1. Launch Excel, Word, or PowerPoint desktop app. Go to Home > Add-ins (If collapsed) > Get Add-ins as shown below.

  3. For online versions:

    1. Launch Excel, Word, or PowerPoint online. Go to Home > Add-ins (If collapsed) > More Add-ins as shown below.

  4. Microsoft AppSource will launch in the browser or in a pop-up. Search for 'LinkrUI'

NOTE: If your organization does not allow you to install add-ins yourself, see here.

  5. Click 'Add' / 'Get it now'.

  6. Click the 'Open in...' button with the desired app.

  7. The desktop app will open, and a 'New Office Add-in' panel will appear. Click 'Trust this add-in'.

  8. After trusting the add-in, a LinkrUI panel will appear.

    1. Enter the activation code from your Microsoft Office Link Delegate.

      1. Note: This delegate will be internal to your organization.

  9. You will now see the server URL page, as shown below. Enter your Frontify instance (For example, https://monobrand.frontify.com) and click 'Authenticate'.

  10. A new browser window will appear with the 'Frontify Authenticator.' Follow the on-screen prompts to authenticate. Once authentication is complete, return to Microsoft Office Link and click on the 'Close' button.

You have successfully installed Microsoft Office Link. You can visit the following articles to get more information:

Using existing Files stored in Frontify

Users have two options when working with an existing asset from Frontify:

  1. Open: This action allows you to fully open the asset within Microsoft. When you choose this option, the selected asset from Frontify will be opened in a new window.

  2. Place: This option offers more flexibility by enabling you to insert the content of the Frontify asset directly at your current cursor location within the currently open file. Selecting 'Place' will place the content of the asset where the cursor is, maintaining your current workflow without needing to navigate away from your current file.

Troubleshooting

Installation process if your organization does not allow individual acquisition of add-ins

If your organization does not allow you to install your own add-ins, an IT admin will have to manually push the add-in to relevant users with the Manifest file at the bottom of this article.

Once the add-in is installed and available in your Office applications, start with step 8 above.

These are the methods that Microsoft supports for publishing add-ins: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/office/dev/add-ins/publish/publish
