Targets for guidelines

Learn how to enable, create, and apply targets to control who can see specific guideline content.

Targets let you tailor content for different specific users, user groups, regions, departments, markets, campaigns, and more.

You can control which documents, pages, or individual content blocks different viewers can see, so people get the content that’s relevant to them without duplicating guidelines for different audiences.

Note: Targets are an Enterprise-only feature. If you do not see the Targets option, verify that your account has Enterprise licensing and that target groups have been configured in Access management.

Create a target (admins only)

Only admins can create targets.

  1. Open Access management.

  2. Go to Targets.

  3. Click on New target in the top-right corner.

  4. Add a name and description.

  5. Create the target.

Use the description to explain what the target is for and who it applies to. For example, you might create a target for a specific market, department, or campaign.

Creating a target doesn’t assign users or groups to it. You can do that after the target has been created.

Assign targets to single users and user groups

Once you’ve created your target, find it in the list, then select the control in the Users or Groups column to manage who belongs to the target. In the target dialog, you can search for and add individual users under the Users tab, or switch to the Groups tab to add user groups.

Share targeted guidelines via public links

You can assign specific targets to a public link so external viewers only see the documents, pages, and blocks designated for that target audience.

When sharing a guideline publicly, you can control whether external viewers can see targeted content by configuring both the General and Targets tabs in your guideline settings.

Step 1: Enable public sharing

  1. Open your guideline and click Settings in the bottom-left corner of the powerbar.

  2. In the General tab, scroll to the Public link in the Access and sharing section.

  3. Toggle on Public link to allow people to view your guideline without a Frontify account.

Step 2: Configure target visibility

  1. In the same Settings dialog, switch to the Targets tab.

  2. Use the Restrict access using targets toggle to set what external viewers are allowed to see:

Setting

What the public viewer sees

Best for

Toggle OFF

Everything. All content is visible, including targeted content.

General public guidelines where nothing needs to be hidden.

Toggle ON (no targets selected)

Public content only. Shows only general content (set to All viewers) and hides all targeted content.

General external viewers who should not see sensitive or internal materials.

Toggle ON (specific targets selected)

Public content + selected targets. Shows general content plus any content tagged with the selected targets. Content with other targets remains hidden.

Specific external audiences (such as a regional agency or partner).

Step 3: Copy and share your link

  1. In the same Settings dialog, switch to the General tab.

  2. Under Public link copy your public link.

Security tip: If your guideline contains sensitive, internal, or market-specific content assigned to targets, always verify that the toggle under the Targets tab is turned ON before sharing the link. If it is left OFF, all targeted content is visible to anyone with the link.

Apply targets to guideline content

You can assign targets top-down across your guidelines. Targets can be applied to entire documents, individual pages, sections, or specific content blocks.

For pages and documents

  1. Open your guideline in edit mode.

  2. Open Navigation manager.

  3. Hover over the specific document or page name and click on the three-dot Actions menu.

  4. Select Targets.

  5. Click on Targeted to set its visibility.

For sections

  1. Hover over the section on the canvas.

  2. Click on the settings cogwheel.

  3. Click on Targeted to set its visibility.

For content blocks

  1. Hover over the content block on the canvas.

  2. Click on the settings cogwheel.

  3. Click on Targeted to set its visibility.

Choose All viewers to make the content visible to everyone with the viewer role. Choose Targeted to control visibility using specific targets. From there, you can Select all to apply every target or Clear to remove them.

Note: Selecting all targets has the same practical effect as choosing All viewers.

Simulate targeted views

Once you’ve applied targets to your guideline content, you can simulate different audience views to verify that each target group sees only the appropriate pages and blocks.

How to simulate targets:

  1. Open your guideline and click Settings in the bottom-left corner of the powerbar.

  2. Select the Targets tab.

  3. Choose whether to simulate by Groups or by Users.

    • For groups: Select which groups you want to simulate and click Simulate targets.

    • For users: Select Simulate next to the user you want to simulate.

The guideline will reload to show the view that matches the selected target criteria.

While simulation mode is active, you can’t edit pages. Use the banner in the bottom-left corner to exit simulation mode when you’re done.

Restrict access to hidden pages

Hiding a page or document only removes it from the navigation menu. The content remains published and can still be found through search or accessed by direct link.

To restrict who can see hidden content, use targets. Assign the relevant target to the page or content block so only matching viewers can access it.

  • Targets apply to users with the viewer role.

  • Viewers only see targeted content if they’re assigned to the matching target.

  • Viewers with no targets assigned can only see untargeted content or content available to all viewers.

  • Targeted content is excluded from guideline search and brand assistant results for viewers who don’t have access.

  • Editors and owners can retain full visibility so they can safely manage and edit the guideline.

Use the show and hide options on your pages in the navigation manager to organize your navigation and reduce clutter. Use targets to restrict sensitive, regional, or audience-specific content.
